Personally, I've got mixed feelings on the issue on the divergence of the general idea of a dragon from the original legends and tales of ages past.
On one side, I dislike the modernization of dragons. For example - european dragons were traditionally evil creatures, and I feel that fewer and fewer people know this because so many people can think only of making nice, protagonist dragons. I'm not saying that there couldn't be both good and bad dragons - only that the traditional stories about them are being lost as people want to make righteous and morally good main characters, and as dragons are being used much more often as main characters.
On the other hand, I deeply sympathize with authors, directors, artists, etc who take creative liberties with their dragons and dragon-like creatures. I do it often enough. No one should be limited to only one interpretation of a creature when they want to do their own thing.
So really, I don't know if I really care one way or another, since I sympathize with both sides of this issue. Anyone else have any opinions on the matter?

Well I really don't know much about the traditional dragons. So I really don't know how I feel about them. I do know that I don't think dragons are nice, and sweet animals that make good pets, like the modern dragons are portrayed as. I suppose they would be quite vicious and mean, but I don't like to think they were total savages. I guess I'm kinda in the middle. I don't really agree with either one. So I guess I'm kinda like you Spirit, I sympathize with both sides.
I like to think that if I were to ever meet a dragon, that some way I could befriend him/her. However I think the modern dragons (dragon tales, Jane and the Dragon*even though I like that show*, Puff the magic dragon) are kinda over doing the whole nice dragon persona. But again I understand why they do that. It's hard to make a show about mean, man-eating, horrifying dragons and expect people to like dragons. Anyway, I think I'm just rambling now, I guess I'm just trying to say, I agree with you Spirit, I'm for both sides.
*WOOT WOOT!!!!!!! MY 150 POST!! I'M NOW A DRAGON FLEDGING!!!!*

I like almost any kind of dragon. Mean ones are cooler and nice ones are handy. Though the kiddie dragons really are kinda lame. They're only for kids, not for us.
The nice dragons, as dragonelle said, are best if they're not overdone.
